The recent CD release of DREAM GARDEN features jazz standards by some of my favorite composers and a few original compositions. I first heard the song "Dream Garden" on a Herbie Mann recording entitled, The Beat Goes On. The album itself is a ‘60s boogaloo-rock LP, so the song's beautiful bossa nova style really stood out. “Dream Garden” was written by the great vibraphonist Dave Pike, and is worthy of a title cut.

I invited two world-class jazz artists – drummer Dick Berk and bassist Scott Steed – to express this swing trio. I first played with Dick Berk at the Brasserie Montmartre in Portland, Oregon. Dick is a consummate drummer from both jazz and Latin genres. The song "Berk's Groove," on this album was written for him.

Scott Steed arrived on the Portland jazz scene in the late ‘90s from San Francisco. Scott is a gifted bassist in the Ray Brown tradition who's played with countless high-profile artists, and is the bassist of choice for vocalists Diane Schuur and Joe Williams. Recording Dream Garden was a good excuse to get both players into the studio.
